Goat Information

At North Park Veterinary Group we are keen to attend to both the routine and the unexpected veterinary needs of your caprine friends. We routinly disbud kids at the North Tawton surgery under general anaesthesia; this is necessary for goats due to their thin skulls and risk of brain damage. This must be done before 1 week of age and male kids can be castrated at the same time.

Preventative health care for your flock is central to ensuring that you have productive healthy animals. We are ready to provide advice on worming, vaccination, footcare and infectious disease control. At the practice we run faecal egg count service and recommend regular assessment of faeces samples as part of a whole flock approach to worming control. Please ring the surgery and ask to speak to one of the farm animal vets to discuss any issues concerning your goats.

It is well known fact that goats have an inquisitive nature and rarely pause when selecting their food sources! Please be aware that poisoning from plants is very common in goats; rhodedendron, ragwort, rhubarb and kale being amongst the most common. If any of your goats develop sudden onset diarrhoea and weakness or you suspect that they may have eaten a poisonous plant please ring as soon as possible.
