Accredited Health Herd Schemes

  Back

Our vets are familiar with the procedures for CHeCS High Health schemes focusing on infectious diseases prevalent in the UK herd:

  • Bovine Virus Diarrhoea (BVD)
  • Johne's disease
  • Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR)
  • Leptospirosis
  • Neospora

Members can choose to test for up to all five diseases, each of which has a set of management and testing rules under the CHeCS guidelines. The rules govern the frequency of testing and define which animals in the herd need to be tested. Your specific circumstances can be discussed with the responsible laboratory and your vet, who arranges for the samples to be taken and forwarded on. Results are emailed to the practice and direct to yourself.

Following testing your herd will be classified as 'Accredited Disease Free' or 'Screening & Eradicating' for each of the five diseases.

Membership of High Health Schemes includes veterinary advice on testing programmes, the diseases, test results and the necessary biosecurity along with provision of annual certificate confirming Accredited disease-free status and also advertising of your herd details through CHeCS. Breed Societies are increasingly insisting that animals presented at Pedigree Sales are signed up to CHeCS.
