The equine side of the practice cares for all types of equines, whether
they be competitive champions or simply retired companions.
Facilities and Diagnostics
|
We have a basic equine operating area
for surgical procedures such as rig castrations, tie-backs and standing
joint flushes. We also maintain good working relations with the
surrounding referral practices and are able to arrange rapid referral
for complicated equine procedures such as colic and orthopaedic
surgery. Visiting surgeons also extend the range of operations
available.
|
|
Our portable X-ray machine
and in-house automatic developer is one of our most used diagnostic
tools. Although we prefer to take X-rays in North Tawton where
possible, the X-ray machine can be taken and used anywhere with an
adequate power supply.
|
|
|
We have a linear and curvilinear ultrasound scanner
with stand-off that allows us to perform both reproductive work, such
as oestrus staging and pregnancy diagnosis, and aid in the
investigation of complicated lameness, such as tendinous strains and
tears.
|
|
We
have our own well equipped laboratory, enabling us to have same day
results for many tests. This is particulary useful in emergency or
critical care cases where time may be vital.
We also perform Worm Egg Counts to check for worm burdens in your horses.
|
|
|
We also have an endoscope
which is a useful tool in the diagnosis (and sometimes treatment) of
many equine maladies. Evaluation of the airways, including the larynx,
guttoral pouches and oesophagus is extremely difficult without this
useful piece of equipment.
|
|
A cryosurgical unit has been available for over 20 years and is very useful for the treatment of some equine sarcoids.
A dental dremmel and extensive set of hand teeth rasps provide for routine equine dental work.
