The small animal department aims to cater for all companion animals, whether they be dogs, cats, rabbits or rats!
Facilities and Diagnostics
North Tawton is a well-equipped and modern practice where most of our small animal work is centered. As well as excellent consulting, operating, minor proceedure and hospitalisation facilities we will find a friendly, caring and compassionate companion animal team.
As well our main surgery we have branch surgeries in Hatherleigh and Okehampton, which provide convenient places for our clients to seek veterinary advice. The Okehampton branch performs routine operations such as neutering, lump removals and dentals.
Whether your pet is in for routine surgery such as neutering or a life-saving operation, they will get the best surgical care in excellent operating facilities.
Our qualified and student veterinary nurses are one of our greatest resources. As well as being trained anaesthetists, they provide good quality  care for your pets when hospitalised and they are adept at a variety of procedures. They are an excellent source of advice (How do you give a cat a pill?!). We are a registered Veterinary Nursing training practice.
We have a good digital X-ray system which gives clearer X-rays compared to traditional systems and helps to aid diagnosis from arthritis to heart disease to intestinal obstructions. X-rays are very good for high density structures such as bone and comparison to low density structures such as lungs. Therefore arthritis will show up because of the boney changes and X-rays of the chest will help to show heart size as well as fluid build up in the lungs or will show gas build up in the intestines with obstructions of the gut.
The X-ray system is also backed up by the ultrasound machine which gives clearer view of soft tissues. Ultrasound can not penetrate bones like X-rays can and will bounce off air so are not good for scanning the lungs but ultrasound is very useful for examining the heart and checking where there are defects in muscles etc such as abscesses, as well as assessing the organs in the abdomen such as liver, spleen, intestines, bladder etc. Ultrasound is also good for early diagnosis of pregnancy.
We have our own well equipped laboratory, enabling us to have same day results for many tests. This is particulary useful in emergency or critical care cases where time may be vital.
Dental disease is extremely common in dogs and cats and sometimes a scale, polish and extraction of any diseased teeth is necessary. We have a dental machine that allows ultrasonic scaling and mechanised polishing of teeth, identical to the ones used by our own dentists, to aid in dental extraction and a wide variety of dental tools and instuments for all dental needs.
